The Building was Normal.

Three storeys. Faded paint. A creaky gate that moaned when pushed. From the outside, Number 23 Irepodun Street, Ago Palace Way looked like every other residential block — noisy generators, children chasing tyres, women selling food by the gate.

But inside Flat 9B… was a horror waiting to be discovered. They Called Him "Engineer.”

A quiet man. Mid-40s. Always wore overalls. Neat. Polite. Paid his rent early. Never brought women home. Never partied. He told everyone he fixed industrial equipment on the Island.

Nobody suspected anything. In Lagos, minding your business is survival code. So, when odd smells started coming from his flat, people blamed NEPA. Spoilt meat. Maybe a rat died inside his wall.
But then… the dreams started.
The Nightmares.

Children in the compound began waking up screaming. Crying about “a red-eyed man” who stood at their window. One girl refused to sleep for 3 days. She said she saw a shadow move across her wall — even though the light was on.

Then someone’s goat went missing.
Then two.
Then a cat was found, beheaded, near the water tank.

Still — Lagosians mind their business.
Until Mama Ejima broke the rules.

The Day Flat 9B Got Opened.

It was a Tuesday morning. Power was out. Mama Ejima was boiling water on her charcoal stove when she noticed a trail of something wet and dark leading from the corridor to the back of Flat 9B.

She thought it was palm oil… until she sniffed it.

She screamed.

Tenants gathered. The landlord was called. After 20 minutes of banging on the door, they broke it down.
What they found?
Was not of this world.

Inside Flat 9B.

The room was cold — despite no electricity. Black candles. Drawings on the walls. A mattress soaked in something reddish. Wooden carvings. A shrine-like altar hidden in the wardrobe.

But the worst was in the freezer.

Wrapped in nylon bags were small bones. Animal. Maybe not all.

The “Engineer” was gone.

He had disappeared the night before.

All he left behind was a notebook with strange symbols, receipts for spiritual items… and the names of three children in the compound.
The Investigation.

Police were called. SARS came. The media arrived. That street didn’t sleep for a week. Everyone had a theory:
He was part of a high-ranking cult.
He used the building as a "testing ground."
He had accomplices still in the area.
But no one ever saw him again.
Posters with his face were printed, circulated, forgotten.
Today, Flat 9B is Empty.

The landlord never re-rented it. They say any time someone tries to repaint the room, the walls bleed faintly. Tenants move in… and out. Fast.

Some claim to still see the “Engineer” in traffic, wearing a mechanic’s uniform. Others believe he never left. That he’s watching — waiting.
