His dad, Charles Chan, was a Nationalist spy with underworld ties, while his mom, Lee-Lee Chan, smuggled opium in Shanghai’s gritty 1930s-40s scene, earning fame as a skilled gambler.

They met when Charles arrested Lee-Lee for smuggling, only to release and later marry her.

Jackie uncovered this in his 2003 documentary Traces of the Dragon, shocked by their pasts after knowing them as ordinary folks in Hong Kong. Fleeing China in 1949, they built a new life.
