A judge tells a prisoner, "You will be hanged on one of the next seven days, but you won't know which day until it happens." The prisoner thinks, "If I haven't been hanged by the end of the sixth day, I'll know I'll be hanged on the seventh day, so it can't be the seventh day. But if it's not the seventh day, and I haven't been hanged by the end of the fifth day, I'll know it must be the sixth day... and so on." The prisoner concludes that the hanging can't be on any of the seven days. But the judge's statement turns out to be true, and the prisoner is surprised on the day of the hanging. How is this possible?
