Politics / Overstaying Visas Attracts Permanent Ban, US Warns Nigerians

The United States government has issued a stern warning to Nigerian travellers about the severe consequences of overstaying their visa, emphasising that violators could face permanent bans from re-entering the country. The US Mission in Nigeria posted the warning via its X on Monday. The immigration authorities clarified that consular officers can access an individual’s full immigration history, making it nearly impossible to avoid penalties for past violations. They further emphasised that travellers are responsible for adhering to the terms of their visa and that ignorance of visa regulations will not be accepted as an excuse. “If you overstay your US visa, you could face a permanent ban on travelling to the United States. Consular officers have full access to your immigration history and will know about past violations. There is no such thing as an ‘honest mistake’ – it is your responsibility to use your visa correctly,” the US Mission stated. It is learnt that those who overstay their visa for more than 180 days but less than a year may face a three-year re-entry ban. If the overstay exceeds one year, the penalty could be a 10-year ban. Repeat offenders or those with serious violations risk a permanent lifetime ban. Since the return of Trump as US President, America has become stricter with its immigration policies. On February 16, 2025, the Federal Government raised serious concerns about the deportation of its nationals from the United States, urging Washington to adhere to international conventions and ensure a dignified repatriation process. During a meeting with the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills Jr., the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, emphasised the emotional and financial strain these deportations are placing on Nigerians in the US and their families back home. Odumegwu-Ojukwu highlighted that “about 201 Nigerians are currently detained in US immigration centers, with around 85 cleared for deportation,” adding that the government was advocating for a more humane approach to the process. “With the new US administration in place, we expect commitments to ensure that, if repatriation occurs, it will be done with dignity,” she said. Odumegwu-Ojukwu further pointed out that many Nigerians in the US play a crucial role in supporting their families back home through vital remittances, which help sustain their livelihoods and fund their education. She noted that these deportations, especially for those with no violent criminal history, should not be sudden or traumatic. “We are asking as a country whether they will be given ample time to handle their assets or will they just be bundled into planes and repatriated?” she questioned. The Minister for Housing and Urban Development, Architect Ahmed Dangiwa, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ceased to exist as a viable political force the moment Atiku Abubakar became a member. Speaking during a media chat with The Nation in Abuja, Dangiwa attributed the party’s struggles to a lack of financial support, stating that no one within its ranks is willing to fund it. “Atiku Abubakar is just like a snake; he doesn’t fund parties. He only gathers money to win primaries and then abandons the party afterward,” Dangiwa said. He contrasted this with President Bola Tinubu’s approach, highlighting Tinubu’s financial commitment to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its campaigns. “Tinubu, on the other hand, funded our party and campaigns. Now tell me, who will do that in the SDP? Is it El-Rufai or who?” he questioned. Acknowledging the political challenges ahead, Dangiwa admitted that opponents might try to sway northern voters against Tinubu by blaming him for economic hardships. “Yes, I know it will be difficult for us in the next election because they would have infiltrated the minds of common Northerners, saying Tinubu brought hunger, poverty, this and that,” he said. However, he expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic recovery, stating that the standard of living has improved and there is greater hope for the people. “My message to those whose minds have been infiltrated against Tinubu is to think deeply about this. If you remove Tinubu, who will you bring? Tinubu has given us all the needed tools to build our states. The North will be making a grave mistake if they choose someone else instead of Tinubu.” https://thenationonlineng.net/pdp-died-day-atiku-became-member-housing-minister-dangiwa/ 4 5 ![]() |

Politics / Zamfara Community Executes Vigilante Who Turned Bandits Informant

Mararraba residents in Zamfara State executed a notorious bandit informant, Awwalu Dan Garin Mararraba, after his double life as a vigilante and accomplice to criminal gangs was exposed. The incident, which took place last week in the community near Yankuzo under Tsafe Local Government Area, was revealed in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on Thursday via X. According to Makama, Awwalu had long been suspected of secretly working with bandits while posing as a member of a local vigilante group. He was accused of orchestrating multiple killings, including those of Rabi’u Bawa (Zafa) and another youth known as Mailahiya in Sabon Gari. Despite these allegations, he continued moving freely between communities, sometimes as a vigilante and at other times in the company of armed bandits. According to Makama, his luck ran out when he returned to his hometown, Mararraba, reportedly to retrieve a motorcycle. “His presence, however, raised suspicion among residents, who promptly locked him inside a house along with his associate. As the news spread, a crowd gathered, and local Fulani leaders were called to witness the event,” he said. Makama’s post further revealed that Awwalu initially tried to defend himself, claiming he was in the town for a business deal facilitated by his elder brother, the village head. However, after a heated exchange, the village head denied inviting him. A search of Awwalu’s phone reportedly uncovered incriminating evidence, including multiple contacts and call logs linking him to known bandit leaders. “Armed locals, enraged by years of banditry and community betrayals, immediately opened fire on Awwalu, killing him on the spot.” https://dailypost.ng/2025/03/20/zamfara-community-executes-vigilante-who-turned-bandits-informant/? 5 7 ![]() |
