In a press release issued on January 11, 2024, the All People’s Congress (APC) political party declared their unequivocal support for former President Ernest Bai Koroma, who is facing charges of treason and other offenses related to an alleged failed coup on November 26, 2023. The APC expressed deep disappointment and anger over what they deemed as the “distasteful persecution” of their former Chairman and Leader.

The press release highlighted Ernest Bai Koroma’s distinguished service as a two-term democratically elected President, emphasizing his commitment to constitutional term limits. The APC commended his peaceful relinquishment of power in 2018 and his subsequent dedication to promoting peace, democratic governance, and smooth transitions across Africa. The party condemned the charges against Koroma, characterizing them as a politically motivated attack on a statesman with impeccable democratic credentials.

The APC accused the government of engaging in a sustained political witch-hunt, intimidation, harassment, and persecution, echoing promises made by the president during his campaign. Despite condemning the events of November 26, 2023, the APC expressed concern over what they perceived as a broader trend of democratic backsliding and the emergence of a one-party political hegemony in Sierra Leone.
The press release highlighted the arrest and detention of APC supporters at various levels since 2018, asserting that the party had reached a point where it had to confront these challenges head-on. The APC announced its unwavering support for both former Chairman and Leader Ernest Bai Koroma and National Organizing Secretary Comrade Bai Mahmoud Bangura. The party urged the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) to reconsider their approach, emphasizing the need for concrete steps to promote peace rather than fueling hate and political divisions.

With the country seemingly on the brink, the APC called for a collective effort to unify Sierra Leone. The party reassured the public of its confidence in Ernest Bai Koroma’s innocence and announced plans to convene a meeting to determine their next course of action, promising to  communicate these decisions to the public.

Highlighting the commitment to collaborative efforts, Ambassador Hunt announced the release of the United States’ first annual report to Sierra Leone. This report, according to the Ambassador, serves as a testament to the “transformative development partnership” between the two nations.

The report details the diverse ways in which the U.S. has impacted the lives of ordinary Sierra Leoneans in 2023. From crucial healthcare interventions aimed at treating and preventing deadly diseases to the support of civil society initiatives, the U.S. Embassy has actively engaged in areas that directly benefit the people of Sierra Leone.

By showcasing specific examples of collaboration and highlighting the report’s availability, Ambassador Hunt’s message underscores the U.S.’ commitment to ongoing partnership with Sierra Leone. This follows Guinea’s recent tragic explosion at Conakry’s main oil terminal. Early Monday, the terminal was struck by a powerful explosion, resulting in a rising death toll of 13, with 88 individuals reported injured.

In immediate response to this catastrophic incident, the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS) in Sierra Leone mobilized top-tier medical personnel, deploying two Mobile Health buses, two ambulances, and essential medical supplies to assist in Guinea’s recovery efforts

The explosion, which shook the Kaloum administrative district, not only caused fatalities and injuries but also triggered the evacuation of nearby residents as it shattered homes and raised concerns about the wider impact on the community.

While investigations into the cause of the fire at Guinea’s oil terminal are underway, the extent of damage to this crucial infrastructure remains uncertain. Guinea, highly reliant on imported refined products stored in the terminal, faces potential repercussions that could directly affect its citizens.
The swift action of firefighters helped contain the blaze by Monday afternoon, quelling the massive fires and black smoke that had initially engulfed the area. The  announcement was made at the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on Wilkinson Road in Freetown, on Monday, 11th November, 2023. The said launch of the Agency is scheduled for December 14th, 2023.

Professor Foday Sahr hailed President Bio’s initiative as a momentous investment in Sierra Leone’s public health. He remarked that the impending establishment of the Public Health Agency signifies a beacon of hope for the delivery of healthcare services across the country.

Highlighting its pivotal role, Professor Sahr outlined that the Agency’s primary function would encompass coordinating public health activities and swiftly responding to any emerging health issues within Sierra Leone. Additionally, he emphasized that the agency would fortify the nation’s healthcare system, conduct training for healthcare practitioners, and embark on crucial public health research initiatives.

Expressing optimism, Professor Sahr anticipated that the agency’s endeavors would significantly enhance public health outcomes, fortify the country’s public health infrastructure, and safeguard the welfare of Sierra Leoneans. He further revealed that the agency’s launch would coincide with the unveiling of three strategic plans, outlining crucial areas of growth, including management and operation, public health surveillance, research, and emergency preparedness and response.


Asserting government commitment, he disclosed plans for a dedicated budget and international partnerships to support the agency. Dr. Vandy, discussing resource mobilization, highlighted the country’s Directorate of Health Emergency’s transformation into this public health agency. Regarding staffing, he confirmed the utilization of current personnel while preparing plans to train additional health practitioners.

Dr. Vandy and the Deputy Minister also emphasized plans to involve the private sector in funding the agency, showcasing a joint commitment from the government, development partners, and the private sector.

In a keynote address, Deputy Minister of Health 1, Dr. Charles Senesie, hailed the agency’s establishment as a dream realized, affirming the government’s dedication to its continual support. He emphasized the critical need for preparedness in the face of potential pandemics, stating that the agency would play a pivotal role in combating future health crises.

Dr. Daphne Moffett, Director of the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), expressed pride in partnering with the Ministry of Health, lauding the initiation of discussions that led to the agency’s establishment since 2014. Dr. Moffett expressed optimism, foreseeing fruitful collaborations and substantial outcomes arising from the agency’s establishment.
