According to Manchester Evening News, Ruben Amorim has been reminded of what Manchester United is missing by two players they once discarded, Scott McTominay and Romelu Lukaku, who are now thriving at Napoli.

The duo scored crucial goals in Napoli’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta on Saturday, a result that propelled them to the top of Serie A, at least temporarily. Their performances not only contributed to Napoli’s success but also highlighted the significant gaps at Manchester United.

McTominay, once a mainstay in the United midfield, was sold to West Ham United last summer for around £25 million, a move many felt undervalued the midfielder’s contributions.

Despite being a key figure under previous manager Erik ten Hag, McTominay's departure raised eyebrows among United fans, many of whom were perplexed by the decision to let him go. Since joining Napoli, McTominay has shown remarkable improvement, scoring six goals this season, including one in their recent win over Atalanta.

His rise at Napoli has been particularly frustrating for United fans, who now see him excelling in a system that nurtures his talents more effectively than his time at Old Trafford.

The frustration is not limited to McTominay's performance. Lukaku, who was sold to Inter Milan in 2019 after facing harsh criticism during his United tenure, has also shown that United made a mistake by letting him go.

Lukaku scored the winning goal in Napoli’s victory, a critical strike that underscored his quality as a top-tier striker. Despite enduring a rocky spell at United, where he netted 42 goals in 96 appearances, Lukaku was often unfairly scapegoated for United’s struggles.

Now, under Antonio Conte’s guidance at Inter, Lukaku is reclaiming his place as one of the most effective forwards in Serie A, which stings especially for a United side that has struggled with scoring this season.

United's current striker options, such as Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee, have yet to demonstrate the same level of reliability as Lukaku, and many supporters feel the Belgian could have provided the leadership and experience that this squad desperately needs.

Lukaku’s success under Conte, with whom he won a Serie A title at Inter, is a painful reminder of what United lost and the continued failure to address their striking issues.
