This thing happened in 2022. I was jobless, broke, and frustrated. Most of my friends had either japa’d or were wearing white and green in different states. Me? I was stuck in Lagos, managing my small phone repair hustle in Ojuelegba.

One Sunday afternoon, I followed a friend to his cousin's birthday party in Surulere. That’s where I saw her—Tolani. Fine babe, soft-spoken, well-dressed. I just knew I had to talk to her.
As we gisted, she asked, “Where are you serving?”
I paused. Something in me said tell her the truth. But another voice said, "Lie small. Impress her."
Next thing I knew, I said, “I’m serving in Akwa Ibom. I just came home for the weekend.”
She smiled and said, “Wow, I served there too! What PPA?”
That’s when I knew I had entered wahala. But somehow, I wriggled out with some made-up name and a few laughs. She bought it.
Fast-forward two months — we were dating. But every time she wanted a video call during “CDS,” I dodged. Every time she asked when I was going back, I lied. I even borrowed a friend's NYSC crested vest for pictures.

Eventually, the truth came out. She found out from my friend’s cousin. She didn’t even fight me. She just said, “If you had told me the truth, I would’ve still liked you.” That thing pain me die.

Till today, I regret it. I lost a good girl just because I was trying too hard to look like someone I wasn’t.
Moral: No matter how small your hustle is, own it. If she’s really for you, she’ll stay.
