Island of the Dolls (La Isla de las Muñecas) is one of the creepiest places in the world, and it’s located in the canals of Xochimilco, just south of Mexico City.
Here’s the eerie backstory:
The island was once the home of a man named Don Julián Santana Barrera. According to legend, he found the body of a drowned girl in the canal near his island. Shortly after, he saw a doll floating in the water, which he hung on a tree as a tribute to the girl’s spirit.
Over time, he began hanging more and more dolls—some whole, some missing limbs or eyes—all around the island. He believed the spirits of dead children were haunting him and that the dolls kept them at bay.
After Don Julián’s mysterious death in 2001 (he reportedly drowned in the same spot as the girl), the island remained as he left it—creepy dolls rotting and dangling from trees.
Now, it’s a tourist destination, but it still gives off a deeply unsettling vibe. People say the dolls move their heads or whisper, especially at night.
