Ijapa and Atioro (Tortoise and the Bird)
One day, Ijapa the tortoise begged his friend Atioro the bird to teach him how to fly. Atioro warned him, but Ijapa insisted. Atioro finally agreed and gave him feathers. Ijapa flew with the birds and felt proud. But during a feast in the sky, Ijapa tricked everyone and ate all the food alone. The birds got angry, collected their feathers back, and left him there. Ijapa fell from the sky and cracked his shell—that’s why tortoises have rough shells today.
