Mr. Moderator, Panel of Judges, Co-debaters, and Audience, I am here today to argue against the recognition of Pidgin English as an official indigenous language in Nigeria. While I acknowledge that Pidgin is widely spoken, we must not mistake popularity for legitimacy.

Pidgin English is not an indigenous language; it is a creole derived from English and lacks deep cultural roots in any particular Nigerian ethnic group. Instead of promoting a hybrid language, we should focus on strengthening our true indigenous languages like Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo, which are at risk of extinction due to globalization.

Moreover, Pidgin English lacks standardization. It is spoken differently across regions, with no formal grammar or orthography. How do we intend to teach it in schools or use it for official documentation? Standard English remains the language of education, business, and international diplomacy. Recognizing Pidgin could undermine the importance of English and further reduce literacy levels.

Rebuttal – Proponent (In Favor)
My opponent claims that Pidgin English is not indigenous, but what defines an indigenous language? Pidgin has been in Nigeria for centuries, evolving into a language uniquely ours. It is deeply embedded in our music, media, and daily interactions. Languages grow and change; even English itself was once a mix of different influences.

As for standardization, every language undergoes development. Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa were also once oral languages before being codified into writing. If we prioritize Pidgin, linguistic experts can develop a structured system for its official use. Instead of fearing the decline of English, we should embrace a language that truly represents the everyday Nigerian.
