Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini has commended Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman’s professionalism following their much-publicized disagreement after the team’s 3-1 loss to Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League midweek as reported by Soccernet.ng
The tension between the two began when Gasperini described Lookman as the “worst penalty taker he has ever seen,” a statement that sparked outrage, especially among Nigerian fans. Many feared this would disrupt harmony in Atalanta’s dressing room.
Despite the controversy, Gasperini included Lookman in the starting lineup against Empoli.
The Super Eagles star responded with an outstanding performance, scoring twice in Atalanta’s dominant 5-0 victory.
Following the game, Gasperini addressed the situation and praised Lookman’s attitude and commitment. “We are all professionals; we played a good game and scored some good goals,” Gasperini said.
He went on to acknowledge Lookman’s impact since joining the club. “He’s become an extraordinary player, especially when he made himself available to the team, becoming a super player,” the Atalanta coach added.
Lookman has been instrumental for Atalanta this season, currently standing as the team’s second-highest scorer in Serie A.
With 12 games left in the campaign, the Nigerian forward will be aiming to finish strong and help his side push for the Scudetto.
Atalanta remains firmly in the title race, sitting third on the table with 54 points, just three points behind league leaders Inter Milan.
A historic first-ever Scudetto could be within reach, and Lookman’s contributions will undoubtedly be crucial in that pursuit.
