A Minute To Run Mad

Episode 4

Alabi brought out his phone, his eyes piercing through the number written on the card. But before he could dial it, something caught his attention—the name written on it.

Dayo & Co Business Enterprise!

"So Dayo is a businessman?" he said to himself, his voice barely above a whisper. He shrugged, readjusted himself, and quickly dialed the number.

He placed his phone close to his ear as the call connected.

"Hello!" he said.

"Hello, who is this?" a voice asked.

"This is Alabi. Please, I want to speak with Dayo."

"Did he ask you to call him?"

"Yes, he was the one who gave me his card earlier today."

"Okay, hang on for a second," the person said. The conversation went silent, followed by a breaking signal.

"Great man!" Dayo's voice came through in an excited tone.

"Good evening, s-sir," Alabi stammered.

"Haba! Great man, which one is 'sir'? Come on, we are mates. Don’t use that word again."

"Okay, no problem. So, I called based on what we discussed earlier today," Alabi said, feeling as though he was being too forward.

"Yes, that’s good! I’m even glad you called now. From the business card I gave you, I hope you can see clearly that I am a businessman. If you are willing to start working, then I can assure you of a salary that will change your life and your family's for good," Dayo said.

"I am ready, Dayo! There’s nothing I’m waiting for. I am ready to work now!" Alabi said, sounding desperate.

"If that’s the case, I will need you to help me deliver a job tonight," Dayo said, sending a chill down Alabi’s spine.

"Tonight?!" Alabi exclaimed, his mouth hanging open in shock.

"Ooooh, don’t be surprised. The motto of my company is 'Delivers at Anytime.' So, if you are truly ready, I want you to deliver a product to my client in the next two hours."

Alabi felt uneasy. Is this not what my mother was warning me about? What kind of product does he want to deliver at this time of the night?

"Are you in or out?" Dayo asked, putting Alabi in a dire situation.

"I… I'm in!" Alabi said, regretting his decision immediately, but he needed money to take care of his mother.

"Okay. I will send my boys to you now. You will be given the package to deliver. The details of the recipient and the location have been sent to your email. Expect them in the next ten minutes," Dayo said.

Alabi couldn’t hide his expression. He stared at his phone screen—the details had been sent. But what baffled him the most was: How did he get my email address? And not just that, how does he know my exact location?

"But can I ask—" he tried saying, but Dayo hung up the call.

Different thoughts hit him at once. Who exactly is Dayo? What does he do for a living? Why am I the one delivering this job tonight?

He kept ruminating over it when suddenly his phone beeped. It was a credit alert from Dayo. His eyes widened in shock—it was a sum of two million naira, followed by a message:

"The balance will be sent after carrying out the job."

Before he could even process what had just happened, a black car pulled up in front of him.

What’s going to happen next?

Find out in the next episode.
