A DISPUTED injury time goal in the last seconds of the match and a huge red card call tilted the clash between Roma and Athletic Bilbao in one direction. Rangers would face the winners of the tie in the quarter-finals of the Europa League if they themselves can see off Fenerbahce. Barry Ferguson's Gers came away from the first leg in Istanbul with a 3-1 victory thanks to an early goal from Cyriel Dessers and a double from Vaclav Cerny. The final of the competition will be played at Athletic's San Mames stadium but they have it all to do next week as they head home from the first leg in Italy 2-1 down and a man lighter. Athletic host Roma next week but will be without defender Yeray Alvarez, who was sent off in the 85th minute of the match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Alvarez has played almost 250 times for the Basque club but was sent for an early shower after he got himself a second yellow. The centre-back - who had already seen defensive partner Dani Vivian go off injured - pulled on the shirt of Eldor Shomurodov who threatened to run in behind and through onto goal. The referee wasted little time in reaching for his pocket and showing Alvarez another yellow and eventually red for the foul.
Shomurodov would pop up with the winner minutes later as Roma turned the game on its end. Athletic had taken the lead though Inaki Williams in the 50th minute, who scored with a header. Angelino equalised six minutes later and it was a tight affair until Alvarez was dismissed. Athletic looked to be holding on but in the third minute of stoppage time, Shomurodov found a yard of space inside the penalty box and tucked a shot beyond Julen Agirrezabala to win it for the Serie A side.
Turkish Rangers fan with kids called Red, White and Blue With Athletic currently sitting fourth in La Liga there is a chance they could qualify for the Champions League via their domestic performances. And they may have to rely on that route given their path to a dream Europa League final at their home ground now looks significantly harder. As of this season the winners of the Europa League automatically qualify for the Champions League, which wasn't always the case. Under previous rules, one league could have a maximum of five clubs in the Champions League so if the winners of the Europa League were in that country's league and finished outside of the Champions League spots, they would be denied entry.
