SECRETS IN THE STAFF ROOM (A high school series)

EPISODE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY TWO

As they drove to the hospital, the warm sunlight cast a joyful glow on the faces of Mr. Tunde and Ava. The music blasting from the car's speakers was infectious, and they both sang along at the top of their voices, their laughter and harmonies filling the air. The tension and arguments of earlier were forgotten, replaced by an overwhelming sense of happiness and togetherness.

Mr. Tunde's eyes sparkled with adoration as he glanced at Ava, her smile radiant as she sang along to the music. He reached out, taking her hand in his, and she squeezed it tightly, feeling a deep connection to him.

As they arrived at the hospital, Mr. Tunde parked the car, and they stepped out, still holding hands. They walked into the hospital, their footsteps light and carefree, and made their way to Mr. Dennis's ward room.

As they entered the room, Lila looked up, a warm smile on her face. Ava's eyes widened in surprise as she took in the sight of Mr. Dennis sitting on the edge of his bed, eating pineapple. "Woah, Uncle Dennis!" she exclaimed, rushing to his side.

Mr. Dennis's face lit up with joy as he spread his arms wide, embracing Ava in a warm hug. "Ava! Oh child," he exclaimed, his voice filled with emotion. "How have you been? I've missed you." He said.

"I have missed you too. Thank God you are alive." Ava's eyes shone with tears as she hugged him tightly.

"Missed driving you to school," he said, his voice filled with nostalgia as a nurse stepped in, smiling warmly, to check Mr. Dennis's vitals.

Lila's gaze drifted from Mr. Dennis to Ava and Mr. Tunde, her eyes scrutinizing their expressions. She noticed the subtle smile on Ava's face and the relaxed posture of Mr. Tunde. A knowing glint sparkled in Lila's eyes as she deduced that the couple had reconciled.

Lila's attention turned to Ava, and she tapped her gently on the arm. Ava, engrossed in watching the nurse tend to Mr. Dennis, reluctantly turned to face Lila. Their eyes met, and Lila whispered, her voice barely audible, "Have you two settled your differences?"

Ava's expression turned guarded, and she shrugged nonchalantly. "None of your business, Lila," she replied, her tone laced with a hint of annoyance. A false smile spread across her face as she added, "You should focus on settling with Soma."

Ava's eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint as she tapped Lila's shoulder, her gesture a subtle reminder that Lila had her own relationship issues to resolve. Lila's eyes narrowed slightly, but she said nothing, her gaze drifting back to Mr. Dennis as the nurse continued to check his vitals. The air was thick with unspoken words, the tension between Ava and Lila obvious, but temporarily suppressed.

As the nurse smiled warmly, her eyes crinkling at the corners, she said, "He's definitely going to leave the hospital soon, just like the doctor said. Please, take your exercises seriously for a faster recovery." With that, she excused herself and walked out of the room, leaving behind a sense of reassurance.

Ramatu's face lit up with a soft smile as she gazed at Dennis, her eyes filled with gratitude. "Thank God you're doing fine now," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.

Just then, Mr. Tunde spoke up, his voice bubbling with excitement. "Mom, guess who I saw at a flower shop today?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity.

Ramatu shook her head, a hint of a smile on her lips. "You know I'm not good at guessing," she said, her voice playful.

Mr. Tunde grinned mischievously. "Fine, I'll tell you. I saw Mr. and Mrs. Taiwo!" he exclaimed, his words spilling out in a rush.

Ramatu's eyes widened in surprise, her face pale. "Are you serious?" she breathed, her voice barely above a whisper.

Mr. Tunde nodded enthusiastically. "I'm telling you, Mom! They were so happy to see me, and they extended their greetings to you. They said they can't wait to attend your party and that they received your invite."

The room fell silent, with all eyes on Ramatu. Her expression changed, her eyes clouding over with concern. "That's so beautiful... but where's the energy to throw a party when Dennis is in this situation?" she trailed off, her voice laced with worry.

Mr. Tunde looked at her, confusion etched on his face. "But, Mom, you've invited many people already."

Ramatu's gaze drifted to Dennis, her eyes filled with empathy. "Not when Dennis is in this condition," she whispered, her voice cracking with emotion.

Dennis, sensing her distress, adjusted his position and pulled Ramatu closer, his eyes locked on hers. "Your party is going to hold, nothing is going to stop it," he said, his voice firm and reassuring.

Ramatu's eyes searched his face, her brow furrowed with concern. "But, babe, look at your condition," she pointed out, her voice trembling.

Dennis's expression remained steadfast, his eyes burning with determination. "I'll be fine, Ramatu. We'll make this work, together." He said and pauses, "In fact, there's so much to throw a party for," he began, his eyes shining with excitement. "Look at me, I'm alive, and you, Ramatu, you're free from the bondage of a toxic marriage, and about to clock a new age. All these are more than enough to throw a party."

The room erupted in a chorus of giggles and smiles, as Dennis continued, "So, yes, we're going to throw a party for you, and just maybe, throw another one at the church and my residence the same day; more like a Thanksgiving." His words were met with nods of agreement and enthusiastic murmurs.

Ramatu's eyes sparkled with delight as she exclaimed,

"Nice idea right? Ava's dad suggested that, and I couldn't agree more. God has been so good to us." He said and Ava's eyes lit up with curiosity as she asked, "Dad called?" Her voice was laced with excitement, and Dennis nodded, "Yes, he did. In fact, he promised to come around for the Thanksgiving, if I'm hosting it."

Ava's mind skipped a beat, but she couldn't help feeling a thrill of excitement at the prospect of seeing her dad. "I can't wait!" Lila chimed in, her voice bubbling with enthusiasm, as everyone smiled and nodded in agreement while Ramatu's face glowed with happiness as she declared, "Let's pop champagne!"

The room fell silent for a moment, before everyone chorused, "Where's the champagne?" Ramatu giggled and produced a pack of juice from behind the chair. "Since we can't lay our hands on champagne, this will have to do," she said with a grin.

The room erupted in laughter once more, as everyone teased Ramatu about her makeshift champagne. "Lila, go rinse those plastic cups, let's cheer to new beginnings!" Ramatu exclaimed, as Lila skipped off to the faucet, while everyone laughed and chatted.

As Lila rinsed the plastic cups, she handed each one to the eager recipients, and Ramatu began to pour the juice into their cups. With a warm smile, Ramatu raised her cup and said, "To new beginnings!" The room echoed with the chorus, "To new beginnings!" as they all lifted their cups in a toast. Lila's voice was the loudest, and her enthusiasm was infectious, causing everyone to laugh.

However, her father gently cautioned, "Lila, you're at the hospital, remember?" as the sound of clicking plastic cups filled the air. "Cheers, cheers!" Mr. Tunde chimed in, clinking cups with Ava, and they exchanged a warm smile, their eyes locking in a moment of joy.

Lila, still bubbling with excitement, stood up and walked over to her father, cup in hand. "Cheers!" she said, feeding him her juice, and then asked him to feed her his. She repeated this ritual with Ramatu, clicking cups and feeding each other the juice as they both giggled.
"Such a sweetheart!" Ramatu said, admirably as Lila approached Ava, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "Cheers!" she said, clicking cups and feeding Ava the juice. Ava, aware of Lila's antics, tried to resist, but couldn't help but laugh and play along, feeding Lila her juice as everyone watched with amusement.

Next, Lila moved on to Mr. Tunde, his chest was tight, he had no idea how not to accept the gesture because of Ava. He didn't want any misunderstanding again.

"To new beginnings, " Lila smiled at him, clicking cups, "cheers!" as she stepped closer to feed him, a knock at the door interrupted the celebration. The door swung open, and everyone turned to see who had arrived. To their surprise, the nurse who had just checked Mr. Dennis's vitals walked in, followed by the lady who had saved Mr. Dennis's life.

Ramatu's eyes widened with excitement as she exclaimed to Mr. Dennis, "That's the lady who saved you!" The lady smiled warmly as she entered the room, followed by her niece, Ruth. The atmosphere in the room shifted from celebratory to shock.

Lila, who was standing before Mr. Tunde, her cup poised to feed him was suddenly frozen in shock. Her eyes widened in astonishment as she took in the sight of Ruth standing in the doorway. The juice in her cup seemed to slip from her fingers, and before she could react, it fell to the floor, splashing its contents everywhere. Lila's mouth hung open, her face pale, as she stared at Ruth in utter bewilderment.

Mr. Tunde, who had been smiling just moments before, was now standing with his mouth agape, his eyes fixed on Ruth with a mixture of shock and confusion. He seemed unable to process the sudden arrival of Ruth, his expression frozen in a mask of astonishment.

Ava, who had been about to take a sip of her juice, was equally startled by Ruth's appearance. As she gazed at Ruth, her eyes wide with surprise, the juice in her cup spilled all over her clothes. She didn't even notice, her attention completely focused on Ruth, her face a picture of shock and confusion.

The room fell silent, the only sound the soft gasp of surprise. The sudden arrival of Ruth had brought the celebration to an abrupt halt, leaving everyone stunned and bewildered.
