Some Doors Shouldn’t Be Opened — But What If They Open Themselves? Lena froze mid-step. The sound came again — a low, groaning creak from down the hall. She lived alone. No pets. No guests. Her bedroom door was closed. The bathroom too. That only left the basement door. It was locked. She was sure of it. Her heart hammered as she moved slowly toward the hallway. The air felt wrong — heavier somehow, like the house was holding its breath. Her phone buzzed in her hand. A text. "Don’t go near the door." The number was her own. Her stomach tightened. A soft tap… tap… tap came from behind the basement door, followed by a slow, deliberate creak. The door didn’t swing open all at once — it eased open, inch by inch, as though something on the other side wanted to be seen. A shadow shifted in the darkness. Lena couldn’t tell if it was stepping closer or if the dark itself was moving. Some doors shouldn’t be opened. But what are you supposed to do when they open on their own? 1 2

Some Doors Shouldn’t Be Opened — But What If They Open Themselves?

Lena froze mid-step. The sound came again — a low, groaning creak from down the hall.

She lived alone. No pets. No guests.

Her bedroom door was closed. The bathroom too. That only left the basement door.

It was locked. She was sure of it.

Her heart hammered as she moved slowly toward the hallway. The air felt wrong — heavier somehow, like the house was holding its breath.

Her phone buzzed in her hand. A text.

"Don’t go near the door."

The number was her own.

Her stomach tightened. A soft tap… tap… tap came from behind the basement door, followed by a slow, deliberate creak. The door didn’t swing open all at once — it eased open, inch by inch, as though something on the other side wanted to be seen.

A shadow shifted in the darkness.

Lena couldn’t tell if it was stepping closer or if the dark itself was moving.
