These are things you need to know before going for your NYSC Part 1
Speaking from experience, I enjoyed my NYSC year to the fullest, it’s once in a lifetime so why should I misuse the opportunity? There are things I observe, learnt from and mistakes I made but these are what I learned throughout my year as a Corper. Let’s start with NYSC camp👇
1. NYSC camp is not for the weak or faint hearted, know that in camp you will be drilled like a soldier (Less sleep, more body work, Less rest)
2. NYSC camp is not for fashion ( you won’t even have time to do all things😂)
3. Buy lots of white clothings(shorts and tees) before going because you won’t have time to wash them and sometimes they get so dirty and hard to wash the stains off.
4. Buy provisions and take extra money!!! ( You see that extra money is very important o because camp food is not just it😂 you need money to eat good food except you are the type that don’t get a stomach ache or watery stool easily)
5. Be friends with soldiers (There is a difference between friends and fb, be friends with them because you will need them in almost everything you do)
6. Take a position in your platoon ( This will help you in getting a good PPA at no cost, especially if you are active and you have a good platoon officer, I am speaking from experience)
7. Be active in your platoon, trust me camp has so many opportunities( in my time a girl was dragged into sports to play volley ball. Note that she was good but didn’t want to join ( I don’t know why) at the end she joined and her platoon won, she was the best volley ball player in the whole batch and stream and guess what? She got to represent the full state in the national tournament😭🔥
8. Do not use the toilet to stool or urinate, except you want to contact a disease you can’t explain. Get a shot put bucket!
9. Make friends (Be wise in doing this)
10. Do not take the position of DOS or Fin Sec. except you can handle it🤣 especially DOS position, it is not for the weak or those that value their sleep/rest so much.
11. Engage in activities (Cultural dance, drama, music night, Mr Macho & Miss NYSC and so on) there are lots of gifts to win and opportunities too.
12. Try to make use of your Sunday time(6am-12pm in some camps) very well because it’s the only free time you have to even wear your mufti too.
13. Get a white shoe a bit bigger than your size, smaller or exact fit causes sores on your leg because you will wear the shoe almost everywhere you go.
14. Contribute to any dues in your platoon, it avoids see finish/disrespect.
15. Try as much as possible to settle your PPA (place of primary assignment) first/second week of camp especially if you are the type that has a PPA of choice or don’t want to be thrown in the village😂
