American’s Eye-opening Experience In Nigeria: Cultural Shocks

An American visitor recently shared his fascinating experiences after traveling to Nigeria, a journey that brought with it many cultural shocks and surprising discoveries. His reflections highlight stark differences between life in the United States and Nigeria.

No Credit System

The first thing that stood out to him was Nigeria's lack of a credit system. Coming from a society where credit is a cornerstone of financial transactions, he was surprised to find that in Nigeria, people only purchase what they can afford upfront. Unlike in the U.S., where it’s common to "buy now, pay later," every car and house in Nigeria is paid for in full. He noted that all the vehicles seen on the streets of Lagos, from luxury cars to everyday ones, were owned outright. Leasing and payment plans, so familiar in America, are virtually non-existent.

Yearly Housing Payments

Housing arrangements in Nigeria also caught him off guard. While Americans typically pay rent monthly, Nigerians often pay for an entire year of housing upfront. Despite this, he discovered that the cost of rent in Nigeria is much more affordable. In fact, what he spends on one month’s rent in the U.S. could easily cover a year-long lease in Nigeria, and the homes are often just as impressive.

Affordable Services

Another revelation was the affordability of services. Whether it was getting a haircut or taking his child to the spa, the cost of these services in Nigeria was a fraction of what he would pay in the U.S. He attributed this difference to the strength of the U.S. dollar when converted into Naira, giving him greater purchasing power. He found himself spending far less on similar services without compromising on quality.

The Luxurious Side of Lagos

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of his visit was Lagos itself, particularly Lagos Island. Divided into the Mainland and Island, Lagos offers a striking contrast between urban luxury and traditional living. On his first visit to Lagos Island, he was stunned by the modern architecture, high-end restaurants, and exotic cars. The opulence of this part of the city reminded him of New York City but with a uniquely African flair.

He observed how mainstream media often fails to showcase this affluent side of Nigeria. Seeing the stylish and vibrant Lagos Island firsthand changed his perspective. He likened it to a hidden gem, a place where luxury and culture blend seamlessly.

Final Reflections

The American traveler’s experience in Nigeria left him in awe of the country’s unique way of life. From its pay-as-you-go financial culture to the affordable cost of living and the unexpected luxury of Lagos Island, Nigeria challenged his preconceived notions. It’s a place he can’t wait to revisit, eager to explore even more of its charm and surprises.
