Whispers In The Bush Episode 9

The hours felt like days for Chisom as she waited outside the clinic. Her baby had been rushed in, and all she could do was pray and hope. She sat on a bench, rocking back and forth, her hands clasped tightly in prayer. Carol and Jane sat beside her, trying their best to comfort her, but Chisom barely noticed them. Her mind was consumed with fear and worry.

Inside the clinic, the nurse worked tirelessly, but her expression was grave. The baby’s small, fragile body was unresponsive. The doctor was called in, and he examined the baby with a serious look on his face. He tried everything he could, but after a long moment, he sighed heavily and shook his head.

Outside, Chisom jumped up as the nurse emerged from the room. Her heart raced as she looked at the nurse’s face, searching for any sign of hope. The nurse’s eyes, however, told her everything she needed to know.

“I’m so sorry,” the nurse said gently, her voice filled with regret. “We did everything we could, but...” Her voice trailed off.

Chisom froze, her body going numb. “No,” she whispered, shaking her head. “No, no, no! My baby can’t be gone!” Tears streamed down her face as she clutched her chest, feeling as though her heart had been ripped apart.

Carol and Jane tried to hold her, but she pushed them away. “No!” she screamed, her voice echoing through the small clinic. “This isn’t true! It can’t be true!”

The doctor came out, his face somber. “I’m very sorry for your loss,” he said quietly. “Your baby suffered a severe impact, and her small body couldn’t handle it.”

Chisom fell to her knees, wailing uncontrollably. “My baby!” she cried, her voice breaking. “My little girl! Why? Why did this happen?”

Carol knelt beside her, wrapping her arms around her. Jane wiped her own tears as she tried to console her friend. But nothing could ease Chisom’s pain. Her baby, the one person who had given her hope and strength, was gone.

After what felt like an eternity, Chisom wiped her tears and stood up. Her face was pale, her eyes red and swollen, but there was a fire in them now. She turned to Carol and Jane, her voice cold and steady. “I need to go back to the school,” she said firmly.

“Chisom, are you sure?” Carol asked hesitantly. “You’re not in the right state to...”

“I have to,” Chisom interrupted, her voice sharp. “I can’t let him get away with this.”

Without waiting for a response, she walked out of the clinic. Carol and Jane exchanged worried looks before following her.

As Chisom marched toward the school, her mind was filled with rage. Emeka’s face flashed before her eyes, and all she could think about was how he had destroyed her life. She clenched her fists, her steps quick and determined.

When she arrived at the school, the students were still talking about what had happened earlier. They turned to look at Chisom as she stormed into the compound, her face like thunder. Whispers spread quickly, and soon, everyone was following her, curious about what she was going to do.

Emeka was sitting under the mango tree, his head buried in his hands. He hadn’t moved since the incident, and guilt weighed heavily on him. When he heard the murmurs and saw the crowd gathering, he looked up and saw Chisom walking toward him.

Before he could react, Chisom grabbed him by the collar and yanked him to his feet. “You!” she screamed, her voice filled with anger and pain. “You killed my baby!”

Emeka’s eyes widened in shock. “Chisom, I’m sorry!” he stammered, trying to pull away from her grip. “I didn’t mean to”

“You didn’t mean to?” Chisom shouted, shaking him violently. “You slapped me, and my baby is gone because of you! How could you? How could you be so cruel?”

She began hitting him with her fists, her anger spilling out in every blow. “You’ve ruined my life!” she cried. “You destroyed everything! I’ll never forgive you for this!”

Emeka tried to shield himself, but Chisom’s grief gave her strength. The crowd watched in stunned silence, unsure whether to intervene. Some students whispered among themselves, while others stared, too shocked to move.

As Chisom continued to lash out at Emeka, her mother, Mama Chisom, arrived at the school. She had heard the news from a neighbor and had come rushing over, a cane in her hand. When she saw her daughter attacking Emeka, she didn’t stop her. Instead, she walked straight up to them, her face stern.

“You!” she shouted at Emeka, pointing the cane at him. “How dare you? You slapped my daughter and caused my grandchild’s death? Today, you will learn a lesson!”

Without warning, Mama Chisom began flogging Emeka with the cane. “This is for my daughter!” she yelled, each word punctuated by a lash. “This is for my grandchild! You will never forget this day!”

Emeka tried to dodge the blows, but Mama Chisom was relentless. “Mama, please!” he begged, tears streaming down his face. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to”

“Sorry won’t bring back my grandchild!” Mama Chisom shouted, hitting him again. “You will pay for what you’ve done!”

The crowd watched in awe, some cheering her on while others tried to hold back their laughter. “Serves him right,” one student muttered. “He thought he could get away with it.”

The teachers finally arrived, rushing to break up the scene. “Mama Chisom, please stop!” one of them said, gently pulling her back. “We understand your pain, but this isn’t the way to handle it.”

Mama Chisom lowered the cane, breathing heavily. “If you won’t let me discipline him, then make sure he faces the consequences,” she said, her voice firm. “This boy has caused enough harm, and he must be punished.”

Emeka sank to the ground, clutching his arms where the cane had left red marks. He looked up at Chisom, his face filled with regret. “Chisom, I’m so sorry,” he whispered. “I never wanted this to happen.”

Chisom didn’t respond. She turned and walked away, her heart heavy with pain. Her mother followed her, wrapping a protective arm around her shoulders. The crowd slowly dispersed, but the tension in the air remained.

As they left the school, Chisom felt a mix of emotions, grief for her baby, anger at Emeka, and a deep sense of emptiness. Her mother held her tightly, whispering words of comfort as they walked home.
