Politics / Yoruba Group Rejects Bill Granting Indigene Rights Through Residency, Marriage

A socio-political group, Think Yoruba First (TYF), has rejected a proposed bill before the House of Representatives that seeks to grant indigene rights to Nigerians who have either resided in a particular place for 10 years or have been married to an indigenous person for the same period. In a statement signed by its executives—Dr Bukola Adeniji, Mr Kayode Ọlọkọ, Dr Mark Faleye, Engr Kunle Faleti, and Mr Bolarinwa Oladimeji—TYF argued that the bill, sponsored by Hon. Kalu Okezie, would erode the cultural and historical foundations of indigenous peoples across Nigeria and could fuel ethnic tensions, conflicts, and long-term instability. The group maintained that global best practices do not grant indigenous status based on residency or marriage, citing examples such as Native Americans in the United States, Aboriginals in Australia, and indigenous communities in Canada and New Zealand. “No serious nation undermines the rights of its indigenous people by arbitrarily granting indigenous status to settlers. Around the world, indigenous identity is tied to ancestry, cultural heritage, and historical connection to the land—not just residency or marriage. “History has shown that forceful alteration of indigenous identity is a precursor to ethnic violence and civil unrest, especially in multi-ethnic and multi-cultural nations. “Consider these cases: Rwanda (1994 Genocide)—The manipulation of ethnic identity led to mass violence between the Hutu and Tutsi populations, with devastating consequences. South Sudan Conflict—decades of imposed ethnic integrations contributed to tensions that eventually led to South Sudan’s secession. Yugoslavia (Balkan Wars of the 1990s)—The forced blending of ethnic identities contributed to one of Europe’s most brutal conflicts in the 20th century. “Nigeria itself has witnessed countless ethnic conflicts due to territorial and indigenous disputes. The crises in Jos, Southern Kaduna, Ife-Modakeke, and Aguleri-Umuleri, as well as the clashes between herders and farmers across the Middle Belt, all stem from disputes over land and identity. Legalising the erasure of indigenous identity will exacerbate these conflicts, not resolve them,” the statement read. TYF called on representatives from the South-West, South-South, North-Central, North-East, and North-West regions to oppose the bill in its entirety, emphasising that the protection of indigenous rights is a fundamental responsibility that must not be compromised. The group urged the National Assembly to focus on ethnolinguistic restructuring, as advocated by Chief Obafemi Awolowo, stating that such an approach would promote peaceful coexistence, economic empowerment, and equitable development for all Nigerians without undermining the historical and cultural integrity of indigenous peoples. “The indigenous identity of Nigeria’s ethnic nationalities is a sacred heritage that must not be sacrificed on the altar of political expediency. If this bill is allowed to pass, it will set a dangerous precedent that could lead to an irreversible distortion of Nigeria’s ethnic foundations, leading to deeper fragmentation and possible disintegration,” TYF warned. https://tribuneonlineng.com/yoruba-group-rejects-bill-granting-indigene-rights-through-residency-marriage/ 1 3 ![]() |

CALLS FOR UNITY IN DIVERSITY 1. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended Minister of the FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, for injecting progressive ideas and innovations in the administration of the FCT, which he said has translated into better living conditions for the citizenry. 2. The President made this commendation when he received a delegation of FCT residents on a Sallah visit to him at the Presidential Villa on Sunday, 30th March 2025 in commemoration of the Eid el Fitri celebrations. 3. Recalling the genesis of the innovations injected into the FCT bureaucracy, the President said “When we started, he (Wike) came up with a lot of good ideas to liberate the bureaucracy, bring forward-looking, progressive thinking to the administration, and giving the opportunity to many of you that would have still been hindered 4. “The independent civil service commission solution and all of that that we discussed gives opportunity for upward mobility and promotions that are consistent with the civil service structure, the Area Council structure, and the indiscriminate development in the face of dwindling resources. I remember the day Nyesom Wike came to me and said 'Please, take us out of this problem of TSA, so that I can do more work, and I achieve more”. 5. Upon giving his assent to the requests by the FCT Minister, the President said “Things started changing rapidly, and I started looking at the opening up of the rural areas, of abandoned projects, and the residence of the Vice President that has been abandoned for years came alive. The health centers were being rehabilitated. The health facilities of the residents of FCT are being upgraded. Our teachers at school are being rehabilitated, buildings are furnished. Thank you Wike. 6. Continuing, President Tinubu said “We wouldn't have been able to open our mouth to even celebrate, if not, because of the progressive ideas you have given. Today, we are living in peace and security is improving. There is satisfaction in our output. The hunger is coming down. Food prices lowering. We are able to go to the market and do business”. 7. He also called on Nigerians to embrace unity in diversity saying that the FCT Minister has been able to exploit this and add value to governance. 8. The President said “ …And our people. They are looking for results. They are looking for comfort. They are praying for good health. They are looking for somebody with heart. It is not about me, it's about every one of us, and the diversity of Nigeria is being proved by Nyesom Wike. 9. “Strengthen that diversity to develop prosperity, seeing that we are all members of one family living together in the same house but we are staying in different rooms. We belong to one family of hope and belief in Nigeria.”[/b] 10. The President also called on Nigerians to care for the less privileged members of society to build a more prosperous and harmonious society. 11. In the words of the President, “ All I need to ask you for is the tolerance that got us together. We heard the lessons of Ramadan. We must continue to abide by that. We must continue to share. We must continue to remember the less privileged people, the orphanage, the widows, the have-nots, believing that we can share both in joy and in times of need. 12. In his remarks, the FCT Minister congratulated the President and the Muslim Ummah on the successful completion of Ramadan and said the residents of the FCT were very delighted to pay the traditional homage visit to the President in person for the first time. 13. Praying for the good health of President Tinubu and his family, the Minister said “ In the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan, and the joyous celebration of Eid al-Fitr, we pray for your good health, that of the First Lady, and your entire family. May Almighty Allah bless you with wisdom, strength, and divine guidance as you steadily lead the affairs of our dear country towards greatness. 14. Barrister wike also affirmed the unwavering loyalty and support of FCT residents to the Renewed Hope Agenda and pledged their cooperation to ensure its success. 15. Speaking on the delegation to the Villa the Minister said that though they were from different backgrounds covering all the spectra of the FCT society they were united in their support for the government. 16. He said” Mr. President, the delegation before you today is a reflection of the rich diversity of the Federal Capital Territory. It comprises representatives from all spectra of the nation’s capital, including religious, political, and traditional leaders, heads of security agencies, officials of the FCT Administration, members of the media, and ordinary residents 17. “Despite our different backgrounds, we are united in our unwavering support for your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda. This unity demonstrates the collective commitment of the people of the FCT to national progress and development under your visionary leadership. 18. He also thanked President Tinubu for the approval granted the FCTA for administrative changes which he said have enhanced the efficiency of the FCTA and positioned it to achieve greater milestones. 19. He recalled the support of President Tinubu during the first year anniversary of his administration by physically commissioning 5 of the 9 projects commissioned . 20. He said “ We still have not forgotten the unprecedented support you granted us last year during your first anniversary by being physically present in five out of the nine projects commissioned to commemorate the occasion. 21. He expressed his excitement on the array of projects slated for commissioning during the upcoming second anniversary of the Administration and the presence of President Tinubu at the events. 22. President Tinubu was presented with a giant Sallah card by the FCT Minister and was assisted by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Information Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Idris 3 3 ![]() |

Politics / CAN Felicitates Muslims, Seeks Justice For 16 Slain Hunters

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of sixteen hunters by a mob in Uromi, Edo State. The men, who were travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano to celebrate Eid-el-Fitr, were mistaken for kidnappers due to their traditional hunting tools. Denied due process, they were beaten and burned alive in a horrific act of extrajudicial violence. CAN demanded a thorough government investigation and justice for the perpetrators, describing the incident as a grave human rights violation amid Nigeria’s escalating security crisis. In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN expressed profound sympathy to the victims’ families and emphasised the urgent need for effective law enforcement to rebuild trust in the legal system. The Christian body also extended warm felicitations to Muslims, marking the end of Ramadan, a sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection, while urging decisive action against lawlessness. The statement reads: “On behalf of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), I extend my heartfelt congratulations to our Muslim brothers and sisters on the joyous occasion of Eid-el-Fitr. This festival marks the end of Ramadan, a sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. As Christians, we deeply resonate with these practices, sharing with our Muslim neighbours the values of prayer, fasting, charity, and community. “However, as we acknowledge this occasion, we cannot ignore the pressing challenges confronting our nation. Security threats, such as rampant kidnappings and violence, cast a shadow over our communities. Economic difficulties, including soaring inflation and widespread unemployment, place immense burdens on countless families. Social unrest, fuelled by these and other grievances, continues to test our resilience. It is within this troubled context that we must address a recent and devastating incident. “A few days ago, sixteen hunters travelling from Port Harcourt to Kano to mark Eid-el-Fitr were brutally murdered by a mob in Uromi, Edo State. Mistaken for kidnappers due to the traditional hunting tools they carried, these innocent men suffered a horrific fate—beaten and burned alive in an act of mob violence, denied any chance of due process. This extrajudicial killing is a grievous violation of human rights and a chilling reminder of the dangers of lawlessness. “We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of these hunters, who now mourn the loss of their loved ones taken in such a senseless and brutal manner. These tragedies inflict profound pain and could erode trust in our legal system, highlighting the urgent need for effective law enforcement and the upholding of the rule of law. The government must act decisively to address these failures and ensure justice is served. Specifically, we call on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the killing of the sixteen hunters and to ensure the perpetrators face justice. “In the face of such challenges, we must not succumb to despair. Instead, let this moment spur us to unite for peace and security. I urge all Nigerians to practice charity, support those in need, and stand together against violence and division. Leaders at all levels must also promote understanding and reject mob actions. CAN reaffirms its commitment to dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders, fostering interfaith initiatives to build a stronger nation. As we extend our goodwill on Eid-el-Fitr, let us embrace compassion, forgiveness, and mutual respect—values that can lead us towards a Nigeria where every life is cherished and protected.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/03/eid-el-fitri-can-felicitates-muslims-seeks-justice-for-16-slain-hunters/ 5 5 ![]() |
