Namibia's new president was sworn in on Friday to lead a country facing high rates of unemployment, inequality and poverty.

And she will be dealing with it with the additional burden of being only Africa's second-ever directly elected female president and Namibia's first female head of state.

"If things go well then it will be seen as a good example," Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah told BBC's Africa Daily podcast. "But if anything then happens, like it can happen in any administration under men, there are also those who would rather say: 'Look at women!'"

The 72-year-old won November's election with a 58% share of the vote.

Nandi-Ndaitwah has been a long-term loyalist of the South West Africa People's Organisation (Swapo) – which has been in power since the country gained independence in 1990 after a long struggle against apartheid South Africa.

She joined Swapo, then a liberation movement resisting South Africa's white-minority rule, when she was only 14.

While the party has made changes and improved the lives of the black majority, the legacy of apartheid can still be seen in patterns of wealth and land ownership.

"Truly, land is a serious problem in this country," she told the BBC ahead of the inauguration.

"We still have some white citizens and more particularly the absent land owners who are occupying the land."

She adds that she is committed to the "willing-buyer, willing-seller" principle, which means no-one is forced to sell up.

Namibia is a geographically large country with a small population of three million.

Government statistics show that white farmers own about 70% of the country's farmland. A total of 53,773 Namibians identified as white in the 2023 census, representing 1.8% of the country's population.

Namibia is one of the world's most unequal countries, with a Gini coefficient of 59.1 in 2015, according to the World Bank, which projects poverty is expected to remain high at 17.2% in 2024.

The unemployment rate rose to 36.9% in 2023 from 33.4% in 2018, according to the country's statistics agency.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said the economy, which partly relies on mineral exports, should work more on adding value to what the country extracts from the ground rather than exporting raw materials.

She also wants Namibia to focus more on creative industries and get the education sector to adjust to new economic realities.

Nandi-Ndaitwah is only the second African woman to be directly elected as president, after Liberia's Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

The continent's only other female president at the moment is Tanzania's Samia Suluhu Hassan, who took up the role after her predecessor died in office in 2021.

Nandi-Ndaitwah wants to be judged on her merits, but she said that it was a "good thing that we as countries are realising that just as men [can do], women can also
hold the position of authority".

Tech entrepreneur, Tade Oyerinde, a Nigerian-born innovator, has secured $46million in Series B funding for his for-profit community college startup, Campus, aiming to reshape higher education accessibility in the United States.

The investment, led by General Catalyst and announced on March 20, brings Campus’ total funding to over $100 million.

The company aims to make higher education more accessible and affordable, offering online associate degrees and certifications in fields like business administration, medical assisting, and applied artificial intelligence.

“Campus has created a model that is rooted in the rigour and legacy of American higher education with the benefit of technology and innovation that students will require to thrive in an increasingly competitive global economy,” said Ken Chenault, chairman of General Catalyst, in a statement.

Founded in 2022, Campus offers live, online courses that lead to two-year associate degrees and certifications in fields such as business administration, technical support, cosmetology, and medical assisting.

Observer reports that the institution also provides an applied AI concentration, responding to a job market where AI-related opportunities have surged by more than 70% in the past five years.

With tuition at $7,200 per year — covered by full Pell Grant awards — Campus positions itself as a low-cost alternative to traditional colleges, where costs range from $11,000 to $43,000 annually.

The U.S. higher education system is under increasing financial strain, with student loan debt soaring to nearly $1.8 trillion.

Altman, who co-led a $29 million funding round for Campus in 2023, has previously warned that America’s higher education model is on the brink of collapse due to its unsustainable costs.
Campus isn’t just catering to students—it’s also providing new opportunities for professors.

The startup employs over 100 educators, many of whom also teach at prestigious institutions like Princeton, Stanford, and Howard University.

Graduates of Campus have gone on to four-year universities, including New York University, Penn State, and the University of California, San Diego.

The company also helps students enter the workforce immediately after completing their programs.

“It’s really simple,” said Oyerinde in a statement.

“In America, we should have elite education for everyone—everyone should be able to learn from the top professors in the country, develop useful skills, and then go on to use those skills to create a great life for themselves," Oyerinde said.

The kind of provocative actions taken by Wike in Rivers is now leading to a total showdown. Take Obasanjo’s comments as a joke to your peril. He’s not and never been alone. Stable government is achieved not by wanton display of state power, but by working to maintain reasonable balance in all aspect of the polity. Let’s be guided.

Whoever dismisses the exit of Malam Nasir El-Rufai from APC as a mere joke is not all together sincere. Truth is, it may open a floodgate for defections. Our party APC needs to put its house in order and conciliate the internal grumbling. Power should not deceive main actors from the realities of democracy.

Our party APC needs to put its house in order and conciliate the internal grumbling. Power should not deceive main actors from the realities of democracy.

As the permutation for the 2027 unveils, this is a brutal but factual analysis of the likely outcome that could make APC win or lose the 2027 to the opposition. The projections of the opposition's tripod plans and why APC needs to do more to reclaim the trust of its loyal members.

Why the North are feeling alienated from President Bola Tinubu’s Government…?

“ I think he has lost his diplomacy, reach and politics of inclusivity with so many people of the North west and the North east.

Shaibu Congratulates Super Eagles, NFF Over Rwandan Win17
The immediate-past Deputy Governor of Edo State, Comrade Philip Shaibu has congratulated the Nigeria Super Eagles on their 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali.

In a statement on Friday night, Shaibu, who is among the Nigerian contingents to Rwanda, also congratulated the Alhaji Ibrahim Gusua led Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), for the win.

He noted that beating Rwanda in Kigali is a boost for the Nigerian players and Nigerians all over the world ahead of Tuesday match against Zimbabwe in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

Shaibu, therefore, called on Nigerians to pray for the Super Eagles players, NFF, NSC saying that with collective prayers and support Nigeria will achieve the desire goal of qualifying for the 2026 world Cup.

The Super Eagles’ 2-0 win over Amavubi in Kigali on Friday did not take them to the top of group C of the African series, but it placed them back as one of the contenders in a pool in which they inexplicably fluffed nine of a possible 12 in their previous four matches.

Turkish-based 2023 Africa Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen played no part in any of those matches, for reasons of injury. Now, they have gone to six points, only four away from top-placed South Africa, who defeated Lesotho in a game played simultaneously as the one in Kigali.

On his first run-out in the campaign, it took Osimhen only 10 minutes to make a mark. Nigeria were awarded a free-kick on the left side of Rwanda’s area, and Ademola Lookman heaved it into the box where three white shirts were lurking. The best-placed of them, Osimhen, connected brilliantly and there was no attempt from goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.
